President Muhammadu Buhari will host a meeting with four other West African leaders in Abuja on Monday with the intention of resolving the political crisis that has erupted
in Gambia regarding the transition of power.
Mr. Buhari’s chief spokesperson, Garba Shehu, announced this in a press release issued on Sunday. He said the meeting would be “aimed at avoiding violence and preserving democracy” in The Gambia.
The political crisis in Gambia started when President Yahya Jammeh who had earlier conceded defeat in the country ’ s presidential election after a 22 – year rule later recanted , asking for fresh polls to be conducted.
Mr. Buhari who was chosen by ECOWAS to be the mediator on this matter and former Ghanian President, Mr. Mahama to be co-mediator will be joined by Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Senegalese President Macky Sall, and Sierra Leonean Vice President Victor Bockarie Foh at the meeting on Monday.
The Economic Community of West African States has insisted that Jammeh must quit the stage for the President – elect , Adama Barrow by January 19 , 2017.
